Dr. S.’s background is in machine learning, system theory, computer systems, communications systems and bioinformatics. He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a minor in applied mathematics and has several publications unifying the theory of finite field wavelets with the theory of error control codes, along with publications related to bioinformatics, machine learning algorithms, and neural networks. Dr. S. is currently an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Morgan State University and previously served as a lecturer in Cornell’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Latest projects include working on machine learning techniques for financial data analysis and blockchain applications.

Born and raised in Zambia, he currently lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan and is deeply familiar with cultural transitions in the pursuit of higher education and a career in the US. Kapaya earned both his BS in Computer Science and Engineering and his MEng in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

As a Fellow for the Fulbright-Clinton Fellowship, she liaised between Peruvian and US colleagues and worked for the Supervisory Organization of Investments in Energy and Mines (OSINERGMIN), which regulates investment projects and fees for Peru’s energy and mining sectors. She took this work further and now advises on legislative impact and strategic planning as governments seek to respond to climate change. Hai-Vu completed her MA and PhD at the University of Southern California and holds a BA from Yale University.
